  I'm not sure why I've never come forth with this before.... But better late than never, I suppose. Dr. Mappes gave me one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I'm 24 now, so it's been a while... But same place, same office, same guy. He worked on my braces, and was always nothing short of rude to me from the beginning. I always remember how snarky he would get any time I would ask a question about my teeth. He just seemed so aggressive. I hated going...But wanted straight teeth. Anyway, one day when I go to have my braces adjusted, he decides to randomly pull one of my teeth WITHOUT my parents consent, and without my own consent. He gave no explanation as to why he was doing it, and I was only given a numbing "gel" rubbed on the tooth that barely worked. Not an injection like it usually would be. I felt some pain, but, again, listened and let it continue because I assumed he knew what was best for me, seeing as I was only a child. He broke the tooth in half on accident, and I was bleeding profusely from my mouth. Next thing I know, I'm having a bunch of cotton balls stuffed in my mouth, and Dr. Mappes is bringing me to an empty room in the back of the office. He seemed angry at me for whatever reason, but looking back he was probably panicking because he knew he messed up. He sternly told me "WAIT HERE until your mom gets here." I asked him through a mouthfull of blood and cotton balls about what I should do about all the blood in my mouth. He said "Swallow it!!" and slammed the door shut and left me inside alone. Okay, I know what you're thinking, this chick is extremely over dramatic... Nah. I'm not joking. This is EXACTLY how it happened. I remember so vividly as if it were yesterday. Eventually, my mom arrived, and he brought her back into the room I was left in. They were smiling, laughing, talking, as if nothing happened. It was basically like "Oh hello, mam, how is the weather today? Oh you're daughter did just GREAT today." My mom didn't believe my story for years. She also didn't understand the parameters of an orthodontist and what they were allowed to do and not to do, so I hold nothing against her. She thought I was in good hands, too, as he also did my sister's braces. But I had a totally separate dentist that handled all other dentistry issues I had, Dr. Mappes should have NEVER pulled my tooth without speaking to my parents or even myself. I don't care that I was a child, I didn't deserve that. Now every time I go to the dentist I have extreme anxiety. When I went to get my wisdom teeth pulled at 17 I had a total panic attack/meltdown in the office of the dentist I went to. It's a constant issue. I don't even go get my teeth cleaned as often as I used to because I have so much anxiety about it. It's probably something I'll deal with for the rest of my life. I really would love to know if anyone has had a similar experience with Dr. Mappes. I know it's far too late to take any action against him for my own case, but I would hate to see another kid traumatized like I was, and treating like I wasn't worth a damn. Thanks for reading.
